SEO vs AEO vs GEO: What Businesses Actually Need to Know

Understand SEO, AEO and GEO, where they overlap and how to build a website that earns visibility in search and AI-generated answers.

Hero

SEO improves visibility in search results. AEO aims to make information easy for answer systems to extract. GEO focuses on visibility and citation in generative AI experiences. In practice, the disciplines overlap: all reward accessible pages, clear information, credible evidence and a website whose entities and relationships are easy to understand.

What is SEO?

Search engine optimisation improves a website’s eligibility, relevance and usefulness for organic search. It includes technical access, site architecture, on-page information, internal links, external authority and user experience.

SEO is not a trick for inserting keywords. It is the work of making the best available page understandable and discoverable for the searches it deserves to answer.

Article Visual 1

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimisation is the practice of structuring and writing information so systems can identify direct, reliable answers. It predates the current generative-AI wave through featured snippets, voice assistants and knowledge panels.

Useful AEO patterns include descriptive questions, concise opening answers, clear steps, comparison tables and unambiguous definitions. These patterns also help human readers.

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimisation is a developing term for improving how a brand and its information appear in AI-generated responses. Those systems may retrieve current web pages, use licensed or indexed sources, and combine multiple references into an answer.

There is no universal submission mechanism or guaranteed citation formula. Different systems work differently and change quickly. Claims that a hidden markup or fixed prompt tactic guarantees visibility should be treated cautiously.

Where the disciplines converge

Crawlable, indexable information

Important expertise should be present as accessible text on public, canonical pages. If a system cannot retrieve a page, it cannot reliably use it.

Clear subject and entity signals

State who the organisation is, what it offers, where it operates and how its services relate. Consistent names, author information, contact details and relevant organisation markup reduce ambiguity.

Original value

Commodity summaries give search and AI systems little reason to select one source over another. First-hand frameworks, project evidence, expert commentary and proprietary data create distinct value.

Verifiable claims

Specific claims should be accurate and supported. Use primary sources for technical or regulatory facts. Date information where freshness matters. Do not manufacture statistics or case-study results.

Logical information architecture

Connect pillar articles to specialised guides, services and relevant projects. Internal links help visitors explore and clarify the site’s knowledge structure.

What Google says about AI-search visibility

Google’s current guidance says traditional SEO best practices remain relevant to its generative AI features. Pages must meet technical requirements and be eligible for indexing and snippets. Google also says no special schema markup is required for generative AI features.

Structured data can still help Google understand page meaning and enable supported rich-result features, but it must accurately represent visible content. It is context, not a ranking guarantee.

This reinforces a durable principle: optimise the substance and accessibility of the page before searching for an AI-specific shortcut.

How to make content easier to use and cite

Answer first, then add depth

Open an important section with a direct response, then explain qualifications, examples and trade-offs. This serves scanners without oversimplifying the topic.

Give each page a distinct job

Avoid publishing several articles that compete for the same query. One authoritative decision guide is usually more useful than multiple thin variations.

Use precise language

Replace vague claims such as “world-class digital solutions” with explicit descriptions of capability, audience and outcome. Machines struggle with ambiguity; buyers distrust it too.

Demonstrate experience

Explain why a decision was made, what constraints existed and what the team learned. For project stories, distinguish observed results from assumptions and correlation from causation.

Keep information current

Review fast-moving articles and show meaningful update dates. Do not change dates without substantive revisions.

Build a recognisable source

Strong bylines, expert profiles, consistent organisation information and references to primary material help readers evaluate credibility. Visibility compounds when a site develops a coherent body of expertise.

Technical foundations for search and AI discovery

A strong implementation should include:

indexable HTML and sensible JavaScript use;
descriptive titles, headings and URLs;
canonical tags and redirect governance;
XML sitemaps and clean crawl paths;
fast, mobile-friendly pages;
relevant Article, Organization, BreadcrumbList or other supported schema;
accurate authorship and update information;
descriptive images and accessible alternative text;
analytics and Search Console monitoring.

FAQ content can be useful to readers, but adding FAQ markup does not guarantee a special result. Schema should follow current eligibility rules and mirror visible content.

What not to do

Do not mass-produce near-identical pages for every city or keyword. Do not hide machine-targeted text from visitors. Do not add irrelevant schema. Do not write unsupported superlatives. Do not cite an AI answer as the sole proof of a factual claim.

These tactics weaken trust even when they produce a temporary impression of optimisation.

A practical Thumbstack framework

Thumbstack approaches discovery in four layers:

01Technical access: can systems reliably crawl, render and interpret the website?
02Information architecture: does every page have a defined intent and meaningful relationships?
03Editorial authority: does the content provide original, useful and supportable expertise?
04Evidence and distribution: is the work referenced, shared, linked and reinforced beyond the website?

This connects SEO and AEO to website strategy instead of treating them as copywriting add-ons.
